Why WSUD?
Water sensitive urban design (WSUD) provides a range of benefits:
-
Healthy waterways
-
Reduced flood risks
-
Better amenity
-
Efficient use of resources

Design Philosophy
Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) has provided a new perspective to stormwater and flood management. Flood mitigation is recognized only one of the multiple benefits of a stormwater management philosophy that aims to treat and retain rainfall from impervious surfaces at source. The benefits of this approach include:
-
Flood mitigation
-
Mimicry of natural runoff patterns
-
Reduced potable water demand
-
Reduced pollution
Stormwater runoff from impervious surfaces such as roofs, roads and paved areas, can be retained on the site using various WSUD treatments, including rainwater tanks, raingardens, swales, soil infiltration and green roofs and walls. These stormwater retention tools reduce the reliance on older stormwater systems such as big pipes and large concrete detention tanks.
