  Why WSUD?

Water sensitive urban design (WSUD) provides a range of benefits:

  • Healthy waterways

  • Reduced flood risks

  • Better amenity

  • Efficient use of resources

  Stormwater detention and retention

  • Detention systems store runoff and release all the water through drainage pipes to the receiving waterways, generally within one or two hours. It is commonly referred to as extended detention when the release is much slower.

  • Retention systems store runoff and retain the water to use on site, soak into the soil or be lost through evapotranspiration.

When stormwater retention systems are used to mitigate flooding it is likely that they will replace a portion of stormwater detention volume but that further extended detention volume will need to be part of the design.

The typical flow pathways for a site with a typical stormwater retention asset (a rainwater tank) are illustrated below.
